Hickam Memorial Walk

The
Hickam
Friends
of the
Library

is a group of avid library advocates dedicated to enhancing the Hickam AFB Library with support services and intellectual and cultural programs that enrich the lives of area residents of all ages.

Our mission is to promote literacy programs on Hickam AFB; to improve the quality and quantity of services at the library by securing of materials beyond the command of the ordinary library budget; to focus attention on the library; and to encourage and accept by bequest or gift donations of books, manuscripts, money, and other appropriate material which can enhance the library opportunities available to its patrons.

The role of auxiliary library groups like the Friends has become more critical in light of escalating budgetary constraints, and the library-affiliated needs of a growing community.

The organization was initially founded as a committee in 1986, and is a private non-profit organization. It continues to be run exclusively by volunteers, some of whom have been involved for years!

The Friends raised more than $1,500 this past year to cover for the shortfall in funds needed when the Library’s budget was cut by more than 20%. Over the years Friends' financial support of the Hickam AFB Library has made possible the acquisition and/or sponsorship of:

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
We are located in building 1711 on Hickam AFB next to the Airman's Attic. For more information about Hickam Friends of the Library (HFOTL), please contact the Hickam AFB Library at 449-8299.
Volunteering
Volunteers are what make the HFOTL. If you want to give back to your Air Force community, please join us by contacting one of the officers. Volunteers get first dibs at the books as they come in. Hours are tracked in a log. 1 hour of work equates into $ value of $5 per hour in merchandise. Volunteers can leave with their total of earned value in merchandise each time they work. High Schools Students needing to show volunteer time can benefit from the work 2 fold. They get the hours and books, cds or movies that interest them.
We Need Your Donations!
Donations are used in their entirety to support the Friends endeavors. Your donations benefit present and future generations of library patrons. The HFOTL welcomes donations of used books, books on tape, CDs, VHS videos, DVDs, records and current magazines. These donations from the public are what make our book sales a success. When you donate items you no longer need, want, or have room for, you provide a way for book and music lovers of all ages to acquire a wide range of these items at reasonable prices. Often donated books can be used to replenish worn or lost books in the library's permanent collection.  For your convenience donations are accepted at the Hickam Library during regular library hours or can be placed in donation bins located at the entrance to the HFOTL store.

Books
As for our customer base... as long as you can get on base and have cash, you can make a purchase from us. We do not limit you by rank, service or anything else, and we do not check ID cards.

Thank you for your support of past used book sales at the HFOTL. Funds netted from the sales are given back to the Hickam AFB Library in the form of books, materials, special projects and programs for library patrons to use and enjoy.
A big Thank You to the Friends Book Sorters and other volunteers who support this very commendable effort.
